How To Take Care of Himalayan Kittens

Cats are gentle and independent animals. If you are considering adopting or getting a cat, there’s one exotic and highly popular breed that you could go for – Himalayan cats. As special as they are, caring for Himalayan cats requires special attention as well. If you’re getting Himalayan kittens, know that caring for younger animals is somewhat different from caring for their adult counterparts. It pays to be very conscientious about their basic needs such as nutrition, warmth, hygiene and protection against disease.

     Protect them from the cold. Be sure the kittens you are getting are not breastfeeding anymore. Cat’s milk is important for the kittens to develop their immune system. Kittens couldn’t produce heat in their bodies so they need their mother to give it to them. That is why the number-one killer of kittens is the cold weather. To prevent your kitten from getting too cold, lay newspapers underneath their bedding. Afterwards, lay a wool or cotton cloth on top to cover the newspaper. Newspapers trap heat so they’re good heat preservers. Keep your kittens wrapped with a soft wool blanket throughout the night.

     Brush their hair every day. An important part of the Himalayan kittens’ grooming regimen is having their long hair brushed every day. This is important because if their hair is left to itself, and it could get matted, tangled and dirty. Apart from brushing their hair with very soft brush, be sure to check the areas surrounding their eyes. Their hair strands tend to get into their eyes and cause them to be teary-eyed. Wipe these tears immediately with soft cotton cloth, as dried tears on their lids can collect bacteria and cause infection.

     Don’t give the kittens a bath just yet. Kittens are very susceptible to cold and the water might cause them to chill and lead to extreme temperature drops that would put them at risk of death. Wet a soft hand towel with very warm water and wipe them clean. Immediately wipe them with a dry towel after cleaning. Use a hair dryer set in low and dry them completely before returning them to their warm beds.

    Give them proper nutrition. Kittens are sensitive when it comes to digesting food. Never switch kitten food abruptly without giving them time to adjust. Give them small portions mixed with the old food first, and gradually increase the ratio until you have completely switched their food. Consult your veterinarian for some supplements necessary for your kittens’ health.
